Join the Million Word Challenge and experience the power of reading outside of school-time! If your school/agency is participating in The Million Word Challenge, you are eligible to compete to win a gift certificate to purchase $50 worth of books. Please check with your teacher or principal to be sure your school is participating in the Million Word Challenge.

To be eligible to win a student must:

1) Read books outside of school-time!

2) List the books read on the Million Word Challenge “Book Log” provided by their teacher. Be sure to have their parent sign each log page as it fills up.

3) Turn in book log to their teacher by the date set by the school principal.

4) Keep Reading! No reason to stop…reading is too much FUN to stop.

5) Each school will announce their winner by May 2010 and submit the winner’s name online at millionwordchallenge.org

6) Each school will recognize the Million Word Challenge winner at their school site.

7) The winner receive a gift certificate to purchase $50 worth of books at Feria del Libro: A Family Book Fair on June 5, 2010.

Million Word Challenge: Annual Grade Level Reading Goals
Grade Number of books
Infants and toddlers 75 board books (Read with an adult)
Preschool through Kindergarten 75 picture books (Read with an adult or independently)
First Grade 75 picture books or 25 Chapter Books (Read with an adult or independently)
Second Grade 150 picture books or 50 chapter books
Third Grade 30 Chapter Books (Large type)
Fourth Grade 25 Chapter books (125 page book average)
Fifth Grade 25 Chapter Books (150 page book average)
Middle School 25 Young Adult Novels (Small type of 150 pages)
High School 25 Young Adult Novels (Small type of 150 pages)
